"Writing and publishing are professions, like medicine, law, or finance. No one expects a stock broker to work for free. Everyone understands that lawyers and doctors are saddled with debt from their advanced degree programs. Many writers have MAs and MFAs in Literature and Writing. Why should anyone expect them to work for free?"

Tom Tinney

This is an Honest conversation with a friend:

Him: "So, you wrote a book? Why don't you give me a copy and I'll tell you if it's any good?"

Me: "What do you do for a living?"

Him: "I paint houses."

Me: "Cool. Why don't you paint my house and I'll tell you if your work is any good."

Him: "Hey...that's different. It takes time, labor and materials to paint a house. I have got costs. You're paying for my expertise."

me: "Exactly. This is two years of my life, cover art, editing, BETA reads and promotion costs. The book costs $3.99 on Amazon. Do you need a link?"

"i go through every emotion possible when writing, from the pure excitement of writing, to the pain and sorrow my characters go through when things go wrong.

It costs me approximately, £2500 to publish each book. And that's without going into audiobooks like we did with our first. That's a whole different ball game, but a very growing market."

Alexis Allinson

"i don't give my books away as I feel that is creates a sense of false direction when it comes to authors reaching readers. Giving a book away on a continuous basis only places the author in a public belief that they are not worth the same as those authors who have found financial security with their writing. We all create and we all require acknowledgement of our creation and in today's world it is mainly based on a monetary system. With the purchasing of books you send support and recognize the work involved in the expression from the author and therefore show support. Receiving books for free, doesn't show support but only that you are unwilling to show the faith in the author's abilities."
