U . S . education official to speak at spring convocation

James Cole Jr ., deputy secretary of education , will speak at Grambling State University ’ s President ’ s Spring Convocation on Tuesday , April 26 at 11 a . m . in the Black and Gold Room of the Favrot Student Union .
Cole , general counsel , delegated the duties of deputy secretary of education . In appointing him , then acting U . S . Secretary of Education .
John B . King Jr . said “ Cole was , “ an extraordinary leader whose talents as a leader and manager , and whose commitment to educational achievement , access and opportunity for all students , make him the perfect person to take on this vitally important role .”
Having delegated the duties of deputy secretary on January 28 , 2016 , Cole serves as the chief operating officer and chief legal officer at the agency and oversees a broad range of operational , management , policy , legal and program functions at the department . Cole also oversees the department ’ s work on the President Obama ’ s My Brother ’ s Keeper Task Force , which seeks to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color and ensure that all young people are able to reach their full potential .
Cole , who was confirmed by the Senate as the Department ’ s General Counsel in December 2014 , was the first in his family to graduate from college . He credits a high school English teacher with inspiring and convincing him to pursue higher education . Cole went on to receive his Bachelor ’ s of Science degree in finance with honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , and his J . D . from the University of Chicago , where he served as a comment editor of the University of Chicago Law School Roundtable . Cole has held several previous positions focusing on educational achievement , access , and opportunity

Grambling State University hosted the spring semester ’ s High School Day , where several schools from various parts of the country came on campus to experience Grambling and what it has to offer on Saturday April 16 .
The many schools that attended the event include Peabody Magnet High from Alexandria , Huntington High School from Shreveport , various individuals from Dallas , Texas , St Louis , Missouri , and towns from Arkansas , Chicago and California . Many of those who attended had already started the registration process while others had already been admitted to the university . The event began with a tour around

for all students . He served on the board of directors of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund from 2004 to 2011 . He also served on the board of trustees of Prep for Prep , a New York City-based youth leadership development program that identifies and prepares students of color for the rigors of independent day and boarding schools , from 2005 to 2011 . In addition , he has mentored high school and college students since graduating from Dunbar Vocational High School , located on Chicago ’ s South Side .
Prior to arriving at the Department , Cole served as the deputy general counsel of the U . S . Department of Transportation ( DOT ) from 2011 to 2014 . In this role he advised the secretary , deputy secretary , and general counsel on legal , policy , and program matters relating to DOTs 10 operating administrations , including the Federal Aviation Administration , Federal Highway Administration , and Federal Railroad Administration .
Previously , from 1996 to 2011 , Cole worked at the law firm of Wachtell , Lipton , Rosen & Katz in New York City , where , in 2004 , he became a partner in the corporate department . He has advised a broad range of public and private companies in a variety of industries in the United States and around the world .
Prior to joining Wachtell , Lipton , Cole clerked for the Honorable Stephanie K . Seymour of the U . S . Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit .

After much anticipation , the day had finally arrived , the Tiger Fest 2016 concert !
Antory Copper , whom has now become popularly known as To3tagga graced the stage with a crowd favorite " Pressure ". By the reaction of the crowd it was a hype opener .
To3tagga proceeded to invite a comrade to join him on stage and together they grooved with an R & B joint . Just as the audience thought the duos duet was coming to an end they exploded on stage with a third MC with a hip hop song , " I ' m Rolling ".
Cooper attempted to run over his time and comedian Steve Brown gave him a scolding . “ If you ' re given an opportunity like this , to open for some professionals then you need to respect everyone performing by sticking to your time slot ,” said Brown . “ You ’ re saying you want to give the people what they want , and they clearly don ' t want it .” The crowd shouted no in compliance with comedian Steve Brown .
Hustle Fam , a group from Jonesboro , Louisiana , came on and quickly rejuvenated # GramFam like a glass of cold water . The track titled " Get It Regardless " had an epic R & B flares with a blues vibe . “ I can honestly say my GSU Tifer Fest ‘ 16 experience as a perfoming artist was beyond amazing ,” said Jo-Slo ( Hu $$ le Fam artist ).
“ Everything from the lighting , the sound check , the crowd ’ s reaction and energy gave me a feeling of euphoria . I look forward to reliving this next year .” Everyone ' s
campus by the Residential Life assistants . The main purpose was to show the various dorm that were available to live in with stops at Attucks , Wheatley , Pinchback , Douglass and Bowen to show the models of housing , apartment style , double occupancy .
After the hosing tour the prospective students were guided to Grambling Hall auditorium so as to start the registration process and inform parents of the requirements for their child or children to be students of the university . Latari Flemming , the director of student activities , noted that they had a high turnout of 315 attendees on campus which includes students and chaperones . “ Out of the 315 students that were here we had an amount of 160 who have favorite male cheerleader Travis Matthew performed a cool classic with his killer tongue twisting rhymes .
“ It didn ' t hit me until other people made it important for me . Like it wasn ' t a big deal to me until people told me it was a big deal to them . I was just excited to be able to perform in front of the larger crowd of students .”

Reward offered in club shooting

A reward of up to $ 2,000 is being offered to anyone who has information about the suspected gunman in a fatal shooting at a club in Grambling early Saturday morning .
William Patterson Jr ., 33 , was pronounced dead by the Lincoln Parish Coroner ’ s Office on the scene at Legend ’ s Nightclub , 7604 Highway 80 , at 1 a . m . on Saturday , April 16 . He had been shot numerous times in the chest .
Jody Adolphus has been identified as a person of interest in the shooting .
“ Everyone was in the club having a good time when the actual shooting happened ,” said Aaliyah Robinson , a freshman theatre major from Peoria , Illinois . “ We didn ’ t even hear gunshots or anything , but they had shut the party down early because of it . It wasn ’ t until everyone went outside that we realized someone had been killed because the ambulance and police were out there ,” Robinson said .
Emergency medical personnel were unable to save the victim .
Police believe a fisfight involving Patterson and Adolphus happened before the killing . Witnesses told police that Adolphus was the person who shot Patterson .
Taiylor Watts was outside when the shooting occurred .
“ I felt sad because of the way it happened . I hate that the guy had to get shot over something so senseless .
“ My heart goes out to the family and I give my deepest condolences . You can be here today and gone tomorrow , things happen so quickly ,” said Watts , a junior chemistry major from New Orleans .

been admitted already ,” reported Flemming . He also noted that “ those who came from a far distance had already been admitted . So the event was to seal the deal .”
The students were then told to visit the Nursing building to attend a presentation of the various departments on campus . Some of those departments that were present include the Student Wellness , GAP , the sciences , math and engineering technology , social work and child education , kinesiology , criminal justice , visual and performing art , mass communication and business management .
Information on financial aid was also provided to those who has an interest . The main event was held in the auditorium of the same building . Entertainment was provided by DJ ‘ Twinz ’ and hosted by Shelby Prout and began at 10:30 in the morning .
The event was started by a welcome by the current SGA President Jonathan Wallace , thanking those who were in attendance that they will experience the ‘# GramFam ’ experience and equated the whole university as a family . Next , President Willie Larkin addressed the audience were he emphasized the importance of college being a , “ serious business ” but noted that one can have their fun but must not forget the need of academic excellence .
