world. Why do you believe that
rankings are so important in
the poker landscape?
I think they’re important
because in building broad
interest in a game or sport
among amateurs, it’s valuable
– probably necessary – to have
top players to look up to. When
it’s clear that the players
themselves also care about the
rankings, it lends even more
credence and generates further
interest among observers.
Rankings also give people
something to talk about and
something to which they can
aspire to themselves. They
open up debate about the
players’ varying levels of
success, and to what actually
defines success in poker.
Online poker has traditionally
had very distinct seasonal
trends. Last year during the
2013 World Series of Poker,
Ultimate Poker was the only
online poker room to have gone
live in Nevada, and at that time
their software was very basic.
