LION TAILED MACAQUE

The lion-tailed macaque is a species of primate that lives in Western and Southern India . The lion-tailed macaque ranks among the rarest and most threatened species of primates . The total wild population of lion-tailed macaque is estimated to be fewer than 4,000 individuals . The unique characteristics of the lion-tailed macaque are its silverwhite mane which surrounds the head from the cheek down to its chin and its tail that has a black tuft at the end similar to a lion ’ s tail . This arboreal species lives in tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen rain forests . Being a rainforest dweller , the lion-tailed macaque is a good climber and spends a majority of its life in the upper canopy of the forests . Lion-tailed macaques travel in a family group consisting of 10 to 20 members , but there can be as many as 34 members . Lion-tailed macaques are diurnal , which means their primary activities are confined to the daytime . Lion-tailed macaques are omnivorous , but their diet consists mainly of fruits . They also eat leaves , stems , buds , flowers , fungi and insects .
