BECOME A MORE ENGAGING & INSPIRING PHYSICIAN LEADER On Saturday, November 19, 2016, GLMS will host a Leadership Workshop featuring Joe Mull, author of Cure for the Common Leader: What Physicians & Managers Must Do to Engage & Inspire Healthcare Teams, for physicians and office managers at the Old Medical School Building. Cure for the Common Leader is an immersive leadership course that translates the latest research on employee engagement and motivation into seven actions physicians and managers must take to trigger effort and investment among health care employees. The evidence-based curriculum gives attendees more clarity on what they should be doing to build teams that work hard, get along, and wow patients. It also and provides skill-builder training in giving performance feedback, cultivating purpose and communication. Mull describes it as “a simple, clear approach to helping healthcare professionals become better bosses.” “The most successful leaders possess insight into what conditions employees need to be at their best every day, as well as the leadership skills needed to create those conditions,” Mull said. “This program was born out of a desire to give physicians and managers a research-supported path to building and leading teams.” Mull is the former head of Learning and Development for Physician Services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a U.S. News and World Reports Top 10 Health Care System, where he directed training for one of the largest physician groups in the U.S. Nowadays, he travels the country speaking and training health care leaders all over the continental U.S. In 2014, he published his first book, Cure for the Common Leader: What Physicians and Managers Must Do to Engage and Inspire Healthcare Teams. Over a 15+ year career, Mull has trained more than 30,000 people and is in demand as a speaker and trainer on leadership and employee engagement in healthcare. According to Mull, the curriculum is designed to assist both physicians and managers. “In health care, employees interact with two levels of supervisory authority: operational management and physicians. While they perform differing roles, they both hold leadership authority in the eyes of employees. As a result, they each must possess knowledge and skills related to leadership and engagement. This is why the content of the Cure for the Common Leader program is appropriate…and necessary… for both managers and physicians.” Breakfast will be provided from 8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. with program beginning promptly at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 12:30 p.m. the Old Medical School Building is located at 101 W. Chestnut Street in Downtown Louisville.
