Erasmus year, Granada 2001. My uni
mate and I had never had to rent an
apartment before. We were clueless
about costs and the student rental market
and we panicked. We ended up paying
10 times more than other students for a
3 story newly converted monastery with
underfloor heating. It was ludicrously
outside our budget – I still have the
student loan debt to show for it! I have
wised up since then meaning that to this
date it is the most luxurious apartment
I have ever lived in!

I never cancelled my phone contract and a
year later the bills were piling up. I had no
idea until my dad was in a particularly nosey
mood and opened them all. He was not
impressed to say the least.
Another time I ordered a bunch of sale stuff
from ASOS as it was free shipping to South
Africa, only what I didn’t realize was that
I would be slapped with a hefty bill from
customs that was twice what I paid for my
order!
