self help journey…
meets Marianne Power
After her travels, Marianne is back
home – and lost. Can following the
rules of a different self-help book
each month for a year change her life?
Why did you set off on this
journey of self help?
After I got back from my American adventure last
year I fell into a slump. I knew I didn’t want life to
go back to how it had been but I didn’t know how to
make it better without jumping on a plane. So I did
what I always do when I’m at a crossroads, I picked
up a self-help book.
Self-help books are an embarrassing weakness of
mine; I find them as comforting as chocolate cake
and crap TV. They make me see a world that could
be bigger and better than the one I’m living. The
problem is, I never do what they say; this is why my
life doesn’t change – I’m always broke, anxious, single. After reading a book called ‘How to Stop Worrying and Start Living’, I had the idea that for one year
I would live, sleep and breath self help and do everything they tell me to do.
