A third thing to do is train. I can only suggest that all should do it, to the degree everyone wants and feels he needs it. Training in responses to disaster and crisis management is a course, almost all western countries do and they are offered by government and private sector organizations. A person who knows how to handle a tensed situation , regardless if it is a medical or a physical of any kind, he will gain the discipline to keep his calm to all things and will raise his possibilities of surviving a threat to a significant level. In recent attack that took place on a train at Amsterdam – Paris route, a terrorist was immobilized and arrested by persons who were trained in combat situation. Of course simple citizens are not required and should not be considered to take such a training (unless they want to on their own), but by taking courses on disaster and crisis management will be a life tool for them that may save their lives. In conclusion to this article, these are the P.O.I (points of interest) you should consider: 1) Keep your calm. If you don’t know how to do this, remember the 3 seconds rule that is applied on decision and action. This could help you also in your everyday life. 2) Evade or hide. A great thing you can practice with your people or children is to play hide and seek. It is a children’s game but it is being run on the same principle. Hide and wait, or move to achieve. 3) Train. We, all, as people eventually in our lives will face a dangerous situation or a crisis. It could be a natural disaster, a car accident or other. A person who is trained to handle such cases, can help himself and maybe others too. It is very important to understand that these instructions are not to scare you off or to set you on panic state that something wrong will happen soon enough. This is an article to “wake up” the instinct of self-preservation that most of us have forgotten. It is also important here, to make clear that citizens are not trained field operatives but simple people who only want to live their everyday lives by being aware that they can protect themselves if it comes to that someday. So instructions like the ones given to the public by media with no second thought, may be well advised but someone needs to notice something very serious. They are to be followed by trained operatives and not by an average John Doe. Alexandros Niklan works as a Sr. Security Consultant at the Private Sector.
