The Scientific Names of Plants
Winter Tree Identification
It may be true that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but
plant names can be very confusing. Common names are inconsistent
and scientific names are intimidating to many people. In this program,
botanist Jack Shouba will focus on the scientific names of plants in order
to de-mystify them. He will reveal the reasoning behind scientific names,
and how to make sense of them all. You don’t have to be a plant expert
to enjoy this program – gardeners, ecologists, landscapers and naturalists
are all welcome! Instructor: Jack Shouba.(TB)
During this two-hour class you'll learn how to identify trees without
leaves. Instructor Valerie Blaine will demonstrate the importance of bark,
branches, twigs, leaf scars and buds in tree identification. The session will
begin indoors with a lecture/presentation. Please note: weather permitting, we
will then head into the woods to practice tree identification skills. Instructor: Valerie Blaine,
