The Learn from the Experts ( LFE ) classes are offered in partnership with the Geneva Park District , Forest Preserve District of Kane County , and the St . Charles Park District .
Hardwoods Made Easy
Ages 18 +
1 Class
Do you find tree identification a challenge ? This tree identification class
will give you the tools you need to identify the variety of hardwood trees
native to Kane County . We ’ ll use field guides , apps , and hand lenses to
learn how to recognize native species . We ’ ll also look at the trees in the
context of woodland ecology . Instructor : Valerie Blaine , Forest Preserve District

Kane ’ s Cranes
Ages 18 +
1 Class One hundred years ago sandhill cranes were a rare sight in Kane County . But thanks to improvements in conservation laws and habitat restoration , their populations have rebounded tremendously . Today sandhill cranes not only stop here during migration but , increasingly , are nesting here too . Learn what makes these regal birds tick — and bugle , and dance — as we explore their life history and behaviors via photos and video . Instructor : Pam Otto , St . Charles Park District . ( TB )

The Physical and Cultural Evolution of Equus Caballus

1 Class When did horses first arrive here ? Many envision the Native Americans riding on the plains , but their use of horses actually didn ’ t exist until after the Spaniards arrived . Horses have been in existence since the Eocene epoch , about 50 million years ago ! But those horses were very different than the ones we use today . We will explore the evolution of the horse , from 3 toes to one and how its use and breeds have been affected by humans . Class will conclude with a short parade of breeds . Star Gazing Party

Join the Fox Valley Astronomical Society for a short discussion in the Orientation Barn , then head outside to discover the stars , sky , and planets ! Please note : in the event of inclement weather or heavy cloud cover , the star gazing will be cancelled , but lecture will be held . All viewing is outdoors , so please dress appropriately . Begins at 7:30 pm ( Lecture ) and 8:00 pm ( Observing ) ( TB / KB )
