ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE
There are literally hundreds of resources available for cancer survivors
and those currently undergoing treatment. Here are just a few that can
help with a variety of concerns. More detail and many more resources
can be found at the American Cancer Society’s site at cancer.org.
Look Good Feel Better
The Look Good Feel Better program was developed
in 1989 by what is now the Personal Care Products
Council in cooperation with the American Cancer
Society and the Professional Beauty Association, a
national organization that represents hairstylists, wig
experts, estheticians, makeup artists and other cosmetic
industry professionals. All cosmetology volunteers
who are part of the program attend a four-hour
certification class. The program is free, non-medical,
and all cosmetics used in the group program have been
donated. Group workshops are held at participating
hospitals and other facilities in a two-hour, hands-on
setting where participants receive a detailed description
and demonstration of a 12-step skin care and makeup
program, instructions on options relating to hair
loss, including wigs, turbans, and scarves, nail care,
suggestions on clothing and ways to use flattering
colors and shapes, and ways to camouflage areas of
concern during cancer treatment. At-home materials are
also available for free for those who cannot attend the
group program by calling (800) 395-5665. An at-home
video can be found at lookgoodfeelbetter.org. The Look
Good Feel Better program is offered in St. Louis at the
