SPORT
Across the globe various cultures have solved similar problems in unique ways . For example , all cultures converse and consume food , however the languages we speak are varied and the utensils we use to eat are diverse . However , the way we move is essentially the same . Walking and running in Australia is the same as in Russia . The universal principles of mechanics have meant humans across the globe have solved movement puzzles in the same way .
All forms of motion undertaken throughout the day require an expression of force . Being able to produce that force in a mechanically efficient manner is the aim of the programs delivered through the Barber Fitness Centre .
At Guildford Grammar School strength is seen as the key cog in the development of your son , its central influence is depicted below . Your son ’ s ability to acquire new and execute existing movement skills , handle their body weight , move and resist movement , work with gravity and endure daily sporting activities is underpinned by their strength . Strength is best developed through resistance based training , including body weight and weighted exercises . At Guildford a systematic , progressive resistance based structure has been created where students progress through a series of levels that build upon previous challenges to enhance their levels of strength in a developmentally appropriate way . This reduces the likelihood of injury and optimises the long-term development of their athleticism .

Whilst many understand there are physiological benefits of being strong , there are many additional health benefits related to regular resistance based training . Evidence exists associating resistance training with the following health benefits :
• a cause and effect association between muscular strength and adipose levels ,

where improvements in strength lead to reductions in body fatness
• a significant relationship between strength and bone health
• lower risk of Cardiovascular Disease later in life
• an association between strength and overall physical self-worth and global self-esteem
A common question that is often asked : Is resistance training safe for my son ? The notion that resistance training will stunt the growth of your son is totally unfounded . It would be similar to saying that playing basketball will make your son tall and riding horses will give your son the dimensions of a jockey . If your son is taking part in structured sport , he is ready to commence training in the Barber Fitness Centre .
Structure Students commencing a Strength Program commence at the Foundation level . Once a student has earned the right to progress they move to the Intermediate level . These generic programs ensure your son moves in a mechanically sound way before load and capacity are developed . We understand these are challenging levels for your son to pass , however we feel it is an important hurdle to overcome in their progression towards competency . Progression past the Intermediate level entitles your son to choose between a generic Advanced program or a Sport-specific program . Delivery of these programs is overseen by qualified instructors with a passion for working with youth athletes .
Grading Students are able to pre-book a grading session on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings
Open Hours : Monday – Thursday 6:30 – 7:30am • 3:40 – 5.00pm
Grading Times : By prior appointment Tuesday 6:30am • Wednesday 6:30am
( 6:30am ). Congestion in the afternoons makes grading during these times difficult . To complete a grading test and progress to the next level , boys must book a time with an instructor and have their name placed on the booking board at least one day in advance . Please see Mr Arron Elkington to do this .
Regular attendance at training is required for your son to maintain the current level of training . Long periods of non-attendance ( more than 5 weeks ) will result in your son being asked to re-demonstrate his proficiency to continue on that level .
Opening Hours The Barber Fitness Centre is open throughout the year for current students to use . During term the Centre is open Monday to Thursday before ( 6:30am till 7:30am ) and after school ( 3:30pm till 5pm ) except the first day of each term . A holiday schedule is published in the last weeks of each term .
Year 12 ’ s post-PSA Sport At the conclusion of the winter season and Athletics , Year 12 ’ s contribution to PSA concludes . As a reward to those boys who have committed to improving their athleticism over the course of the year they are able to continue to access the Barber Fitness Centre to maintain a healthy , active lifestyle . Permission will not be automatic and will be dependent upon their commitment to their PSA sport and the regular use of these facilities over the year .
