PR E PA R ATORY S C HO OL Swimming The Preparatory School celebrated the first of its Centenary year carnivals with the Quarter Swimming Carnival, held on Tuesday February 25, 2014. On a warm and balmy evening, the carnival ran like clockwork, thanks primarily to the use of a cutting edge timing system generously loaned to us by the Guildford and Kalamunda Districts Swimming Club. Particular acknowledgement must go to Mr Trevor Verran who helped set up and oversee the use of the system, going above and beyond in his efforts to support us. As always, all students should be commended for their efforts, however special mention must go to the following who achieved outstanding personal success: • Year 4 Champion Boy and Girl (Allen Cup) Alistair Johnston (West) and Isla Harvey (South) • Year 5 Champion Boy and Girl (Patton Cup) Elijah Hewett (South) and Zoe Langtry (East) • Year 6 Champion Boy and Girl (Cole Cup) James Gregory (West) and Hannah Sivic (South) • Most Improved (Lattice Cup) Brayden Scully (Year 5 South) and Heath Collins (Year 6 North) • Most Outstanding Boy and Girl (Kershaw Cup) James Gregory (Year 6 West) and Hannah Sivic (Year 6 South) Caitlin’s experience of a lifetime Year 3 student Caitlin had the experience of a lifetime when she was given the opportunity to interview cricketer Brad Hogg for the television crews, at the Big Bash League final in February. According to proud mum Katherine, Caitlin was a star on the night and did extremely well with everything that was happening around her! 38 • Relay Champion Quarter (Moore Cup) – South • Champion Quarter (Manners Cup) – South 2014 saw Guildford Grammar Preparatory School implement, through the Department of Education and Training, an intensive two week In-Term Swim Program for our Year 1 – 3 students. Held at the Preparatory School pool over the first two weeks of the year, students swam for 45 minutes every day, consolidating and developing their swim and survival skills. To capitalise on the success of this intensive program, the Dolphin Swimming Carnival was brought forward to Week 6 of the term. In hot, but enjoyable summer conditions, students had the opportunity to participate in a non-competitive atmosphere where they could revel in the chance to show off their swimming skills to friends and family. No points or winners were recorded, however all students should be commended for their efforts. Well done to all Preparatory School students on their efforts for swimming again this year. I look forward to a successful 2015 season and encourage all budding swimmers to use this time in the interim to work hard, commit to their goals and persevere through the winter months, for in time these efforts will evolve into opportunity and reward.
