boys of the Blue squad a lot about tackling,
with four people making over 10 tackles
and the record from last year being broken
for the most tackles. These games marked
the end of the CBHS Rugby Festival,
with Julian Giustiniano (12Be) and
Harry Cassell (12SG) awarded best
forward and back for the Guildford
Grammar School sides.
Rest and relaxation was on the cards for the
next day. A two hour bus ride would land
us at Hamner Springs and accommodation
with Wi-Fi!
The next day we travelled back from

Australian Rules
The football community were joined
by AFL greats Darren Harris, Larry Kickett,
Gavin Bell and Luke Miles at their jersey
presentation last month in the Foundation
Pavilion.
Darren Harris is a former West Perth WAFL
player and coach who has worked as an
assistant coach at the West Coast Eagles
and development manager at the Carlton
Football Club. Larry Kickett (He 70-72) is
an Old Guildfordian who played 227 WAFL
games for East Perth and Claremont and
is a life member at the East Perth Royals.
Larry was selected to carry the torch for
the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and
now serves as a member for the Western
Australian Football Commission and
an Aboriginal Mentor and Community
Advisor for Chevron Australia. Gavin Bell
is a former West Perth WAFL player and
Colts coach. He was selected as the WA
House, a boarding house for CBHS. Both
teams had a game that afternoon against
St Andrews. Twenty-eight people had to fill
thirty spots for these games, so the team
was a little worried! The White squad
played first and played a good game of
rugby, but were just lacking some physicality
against some of the St Andrews boys.
The Blue Squad went down by a large
number of points, yet the game taught
each player something new. Each player
faced hardships with changing positions
and mismatches in size, and had to learn
something about themselves in and after
this game.
On our last day we visited the International
Antarctic Centre, where we experienced a
snow storm simulator, a 4D movie about
Antarctica and Hagglund rides. As this was
the last night it was fitting that we would go
out for dinner as a team. The night was spent
munching on ribs, clapping, and laughing as
countless awards were distributed.
The rugby tour did a lot for the team. I
believe it brought the 36 boys together as a
group so that even when in Perth, playing in
1st XV or 2nd XV, we will still collectively be
Guildford Grammar School Rugby and not
individual teams.

Rugby camp
The Guildford Grammar School Rugby Camp took place on the
12-15 April 2014. The players from Years 5-12 were treated like
the professional Western Force team with a full day at Rugby WA
Headquarters in Mt Claremont, with sessions on season planning,
goal setting and what it means to be 3G at Guildford Grammar
School.
The players hit the gym for a fitness session, followed by the hot/
cold baths for a recovery session and then spent some time with
RugbyWA Elite coaches who provided some expert advice on
nutrition and core skills training. Later in the afternoon the players
and their parents were bussed to NIB Stadium where after tunnelling
on the Western Force, the group witnessed them beat the NSW
Waratahs with the three try haul to Nic Cummins. At half time the
Preparatory School team and the Year 7s took centre stage and
played a short match against the Southern Lions Club.
the WAFL for Swan Districts before being
drafted by the St Kilda Football Club. He
won the 2010 AFL Grand Final Sprint and
has returned to the WAFL.
Days 2 and 3 saw the teams work with their coaches at the School,
utilising the Preparatory School rugby oval, AFL and soccer fields, for
a rotation of drills and skills in preparation for Tuesday’s match.
During the camp the boys enjoyed the meals prepared by the Dining
Hall staff and the generous contribution of the rugby community,
who contributed baked goods and helped serve and clean up after
meals. Thank you to our amazing group of supporters.
Day 4 was match day and after a morning rest the boys assembled
at Bayswater Rugby Club. The Year 7 and 9 teams showed the way
on the scoreboard, but it has to be said that all teams represented
themselves, their coaches and School impeccably - very 3G. All
spectators commented on how well drilled the teams were and how
their skill level had improved as a direct result of the camp. Players,
coaches and parents finished the evening together with a pasta
meal at the Club.
