OLD GUILDFORDIANS was asked to supply John with a reference so that he could enter St George ’ s College , at the University of Western Australia , where he would study for Bachelor degrees in Science and Dentistry . John went on to practise Dentistry at Perth Dental Hospital , including Canning Vale Prison , later setting up a private practice with his sister Elizabeth in Glen Forrest .
During his time at University , John developed a strong interest in “ having a say ” if he thought things could be improved , and took on senior positions including at St George ’ s College , University Dental Students ’ Society , Guild of Undergraduates Council and the University Liberal Club .
In all the years working as a member of parliament and minister , John has been involved in many interesting projects , been to remarkable places and met fascinating people . During his first tenure as Health Minister in 1999 , he recalls travelling to London and visiting the Royal Society , the independent scientific academy of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth which is dedicated to promoting excellence in science . John was involved in discussions about genetic modification of crops , something that is still hotly debated here in Australia . While at the Royal Society , which first met in the year 1660 , John was drawn to a painting of Sir Isaac Newton on the wall . Newton , a physicist and mathematician , is broadly regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time , and seeing his painting helped John appreciate the Society ’ s incredible 350 years of history and scientific endeavour .
With science in mind , John also recalls meeting Lord Robert Winston , Labour member of the House of Lords and eminent medical research scientist and clinician , recognised for many TV documentaries including The Human Body . In a conversation at Perth ’ s Parliament House in 2007 , John recalls how Lord Winston , who is of Jewish descent , made a comment about how he regarded the Church of England to be a very positive force for social cohesion and moderation in the UK .
“ I remember my first day of school when I walked through the Lych Gate , excited yet somewhat apprehensive about what lay in store .”
The other particular comment John recalls is how Lord Winston said he is sometimes asked what he regards as his most significant achievement , with most expecting him to nominate a particular medical or scientific endeavour . He said his usual response is being the father of three children who are making a positive contribution to society . As the father of three children himself ( Christopher , Wb 1997-2003 , James , Wb 1998-2004 , and Olivia ), this was something John related to .
Politician and former captain of Pakistan ’ s cricket team , Imran Khan , has left an indelible impression on John . He met Imran in Pakistan while leading a trade delegation of medical experts in 1999 . Imran proved to be a very warm and charismatic individual , who interestingly had a great knowledge of much about Perth and Afghan camel drivers in Australia . Greatly concerned about the social conditions in Pakistan , Imran had established a major cancer hospital in Lahore in the memory of his late mother .
Naturally one of the greatest honours for a Commonwealth subject is meeting Queen Elizabeth II , something John experienced in 2000 while hosting the Queen at the opening of a surgical training facility at the University of Western Australia .
Always promoting the Arts , John made mention that he has met many wonderful actors , musicians , authors and artists , including an abundance of very talented Western Australians .
Reminiscing about his considerable political career and the plethora of unique and meaningful experiences , John expressed gratitude for what he has learnt along the journey , including the broader teachings of Guildford Grammar School . He felt that life provides an opportunity to experience and learn , and while not all lessons are immediately obvious or applicable , over time they somehow play their part .
When asked for insight into his political journey , John said , “ It has been an absolute privilege to serve . I have been fortunate to have held various ministerial portfolios and I have viewed the stewardship of these portfolios as a major responsibility . It is hard work , but I have found a great deal of reward in overseeing activities of government such as the State ’ s health , police and planning systems , support for the cultural sector , and playing a significant role in major projects including Elizabeth Quay , the Perth Cultural Centre revitalisation , the new WA Museum , Perth City Link and the new Perth Children ’ s Hospital .”
As a serving member of parliament for more than 23 years it seemed obvious to ask John if he had any thoughts on what has helped his political longevity . He humbly responded by saying it was a combination of commitment , determination and being in “ the right place at the right time . You need to work hard and be persistent and patient . Don ’ t be disappointed if you can ’ t make a difference immediately ... it is a marathon , not a sprint . Preparedness is the key , so do your homework and your groundwork .
