PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Convict Day in Year 4

On Wednesday 19 October the Year 4 students went back in time , more than 200 years , and came to school dressed as convicts from the First Fleet .
Dr Saxby organised the musicians and instrumentalists and family members were treated to convicts singing Botany Bay , and I am Australian .
Back in the classroom all students gave a short speech about an actual convict from The First Fleet whom they had researched .
The afternoon finished with students showing their families board games that they had made in small groups . All games included questions written by the students .
It was a great way to showcase their learning . Carol Ray , Naomi Doven and Jen Weston
Kelsi : On Convict Day , I dressed up as Jane Dundas who was transported to Australia on the convict ship , The Prince of Wales . I made a speech about Jane to the class and the parents . Jane was a laundry maid working in London when she was convicted of stealing a tablecloth and napkins . She was 29 years old . All the speeches were amazing . After the speeches we played our convict board games with our parents . It was so much fun .
Brandan : On Convict Day we all dressed up and made speeches . So did the teachers . We made board games . My group made the game Journey to Australia .
Jesse : As all the Year 4 ’ s walked into their classrooms dressed as Convicts , they looked amazing . I could see that parents had put a lot of effort into them . When we were on stage mouths dropped as the singing was beautiful and I am sure our visitors loved it . I liked that the convict speeches were expressive and clear . Thank you for making the Year 4 convict day successful .
Tate : Our Year 4 Convict Day was terrific ! Everybody dressed up and I loved hearing all the speeches . I even got to film the speeches .
The best part of all was singing ‘ Botany Bay ’ and ‘ I am Australian ’ in Priestley Hall because everyone remembered the words .
Samuel : I think it was good to research the First Fleet convicts and then do our speech dressed up as the convict we chose to speak about . I liked how creative everyone came dressed up . I think Convict Day was great .
Omal : After lunch , the real fun began . We first sang ‘ Botany Bay ’ and ‘ I am Australian ’, then we went to our classroom and presented our speeches . Then we played the board games , we worked so hard on .

1000 books for

Zambia

Last year Miss Vance ’ s parents made a visit to Zambia to assist in the building of a school for an underprivileged village ; Nsobe Trust School . All materials needed to build the school had to be shipped from Australia months earlier as resources in Zambia are scarce . As the school took shape , resources for students and teachers to use became the next obstacle to overcome . Miss Vance , with the support of our wonderful community , collected and boxed up over 1000 books to be sent over to the school .
Nsobe Trust School is a community school with the vision : Developing the nation ’ s human resources through education , personal empowerment and opportunity , for the glory of God .
In Rural Zambia there are not enough schools and there was no school accessible to the village children . Ninety percent of the village
