On the weekend of August 20-21 , 13 Guildford Grammar School boys competed in Round 5 of the UniSA Human Powered Vehicle Super Series in Busselton . Building on the success of two previous years of racing , the team constructed and raced two vehicles at this year ’ s event ; The G-Train and the G-Force .
The procurement of the second vehicle was made possible through the hard work of the School ’ s Director of Community Relations , Mr Richie Longson and Guildford Grammar School parent , Mrs Heidi Cowcher . Richie and Heidi worked tirelessly to secure partnerships with local businesses and individuals including Caversham Plant Hire , Midland IGA , Logic Cranes , Avon Water and the Guildford Grammar School P & F Society . The whole team is extremely grateful to our partners and to the parents and staff who came down to Busselton to support us .

These boys raced hard all day , and four hours into the six hour race they were placed 6th out of the 12 teams in the Junior Secondary Category . With an hour and a half to go , the vehicle pulled into the pits with a broken horn and the time spent repairing it pushed them back into 7th place . Once back on the track the race was unfortunately cancelled due to strong wind and rain . Each boy worked hard for the team and supported one another throughout the day . They finished the day in 7th place having completed 103 laps .
Our Senior Secondary team racing in the G-Train comprised of :
• Alexander Edgar ( 10Ha )
• Christopher Cowcher ( 10Ha )
• Kane Clarke ( 12Ha )
• Lachlan Byrne ( 8He )
These boys had a tough day on the track , racing in an open vehicle in wet and wild conditions . With only four riders , each
team member had to ride for longer . In the first half of the race the team were sitting 12th out of 14 in their category . After a big effort from all the riders , they managed to push themselves up into 10th place also completing 103 laps in total . Special mention should go to Lachlan Byrne , who despite being a Year 8 made the decision to race in a category above to make the event more manageable for a depleted senior secondary team .
I am really pleased with the way the team performed this year . Not because of where they placed on the day but because of the journey they made to get to race day and because of the exemplary manner in which they represented the School at the event . All those involved will gain a great deal from this program and it is for this reason that we are so pleased that the Pedal Prix initiative continues to go from strength-to-strength , thanks to the hard work and dedication of all of the boys and supporting staff . Thanks must also go to our partners , Caversham Plant Hire , Midland IGA , Logic Cranes , John and Heidi Cowcher , Sunwise Energy , Rick Wilson MP , Avon Waste and the Guildford Grammar School P & F , for their support .
