Silver Springs State Park
Another of the largest springs, and one of the more popular destinations, is Silver Springs State Park,
in Ocala. These waters are as clear as glass, and are probably the most famous for the glass-bottom
boat rides. You can bring your own canoe or kayak for paddling ($4 launch fee). Camping is also a
recommended activity here, and there are modern cabins to rent, as well as over 50 sites with full facilities for setting up camp and staying overnight. Take a guided horseback ride through the spring’s
trails, where you can experience the best of Silver Spring’s natural wonders.
Blue Spring
Head to Blue Spring on the St. John’s River in Orange City for manatee viewing. Blue Spring is the
largest spring on the river, and is “a crucial winter
refuge for manatees.” Live oaks drip and lean into
the spring, and the clear, vivid blue water filled
with manatees makes for amazing photography
and a very memorable experience.
Because the manatees seek refuge here in the winter, swimming, diving, and canoeing are restricted
during the colder seasons. However, you can view
the manatees from the boardwalks that overlook
the water. A wide selection of cabins, campgrounds,
trails, and picnic areas are available here, as well.
