Anna Manson is an engineering apprentice at Spirit AeroSystems in Prestwick . We asked what attracted her to go down the apprenticeship route “ I mostly thought about being an engineer , although at one point I wanted to become a wedding planner which would ’ ve been a completely different route to go down ! Engineering won in the end , maybe because I come from quite an engineering family . My dad works at Spirit and my uncle is a chemical engineer .”
“ My job is really hands-on - drilling , nuts and bolts , lifting , assembling . I also do a bit of riveting in different sections . There are also robot machines that you can use . “
“ In my final year as an apprentice I was at Spirit five days a week , as you don ’ t go to college in the fourth year . In first year you ’ re in college full-time , then in second and third year you ’ re in college one day a week . In the final year it ’ s distance learning which is
AYRSHIRE SCHOOL PUPILS NOW HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY FOR A BRAND NEW WORK-BASED QUALIFICATION WHILE STILL AT SCHOOL
A Foundation Apprenticeship is a great opportunity for school pupils to learn in college and the workplace over two years while they are still at school . Ayrshire College is offering three Foundation Apprenticeships in : Information Technology ( Software Development ), Social Services ( Children and Young People ) and Engineering . Each course is at SCQF Level 6 and is a two year commitment .
These courses are aimed at school pupils going into S5 across Ayrshire to offer them valuable work experience before they leave school . The courses have been designed to be challenging and exciting for the pupils . A big part of the challenge is the independence the pupil has travelling to college and completing the course while they are taking other subjects at school .
Foundation Apprenticeships are held at college two afternoons a week during school hours .
the hardest because you ’ re used to being in college with your lecturers . That whole structure of the apprenticeship eases you into being in the workplace full-time .”
Now that I ’ ve finished my apprenticeship I am an approved operator . In the future I ’ d love to be in a position at Spirit where I can travel to lots of different countries .”

Complete a Foundation Apprenticeship at college while still at school !

They are counted as one of the pupils subjects in their school timetable and each Foundation Apprenticeship is different . The second year of each course has more work placement hours than the first to enable the pupil to gain as much experience with an employer as possible . There is lots of support for pupils when they are out in a work placement .
Employers are very involved in Foundation Apprenticeships . Each pupil will spend time in work placements with companies in the industry sector . The employer will actively engage with the pupil and see first-hand how committed , skilled and motivated this young person is .
One of the biggest issues young people face when they leave school is not having any work experience . Pupils gain a lot of work experience from the work placements and are exposed to the world of work and employer expectations .
