Documentaries bring us the reality of life, but feature films like Laura Terruso’s (“Hello, My Name Is Doris”) hilarious “Fits and Starts” takes reality to ironically humorous new levels. We meet Jen (Greta Lee) and David (Wyatt Cenac), a husband and wife who are both writers; one extraordinarily successful, the other struggling. We are privy to a day in their life with all the ups and downs, the lack of communication, and the typical pitfalls of marriage that make us laugh, while we see ourselves in many of the situations. And Brett Haley’s compelling film “The Hero,” opening June 9th, starring Sam Elliott and Nick Offerman introduces us to Lee Hayden (Elliott), a struggling older actor, diagnosed with cancer, who tries to write and right the final chapter of his life. Instead, he finds there’s more living to do! Filled with humor and love, “The Hero” is an exceptionally heartfelt film.

On the darker side of life is Giancarlo Esposito’s new film “This Is Your Death” starring Josh Duhamel and Sarah Wayne Callies. As reality game show host Adam Rogers (Duhamel) pushes the envelope of acceptability thanks to a California legal loophole, contestants commit suicide on-air for the financial benefit of loved ones. It’s a dark societal statement about today’s desensitized humanity and maybe even our future.

While life has its ups and downs, traumatic events can shape and influence not only ourselves, but other’s perceptions of us as well. Jessica M. Thompson’s “The Light of the Moon” is a poignant portrayal of a strong, independent, and intelligent young professional’s life after rape finds a way to depict reality and insight into this situation. The strength and beauty of her resiliency is expressed visually, while giving us richly textured characters and dialogue. It’s a film that will start a much needed conversation in our society.
