The Road to Hea

Every mom and dad has the perfect partner in mind for their child . As they grow into mature adults , we hope their partner will fill our expectations . Likewise , when we marry into a family , they too will have expectations . However , those expectations can get in the way and set up blinders which can cause rifts in the family dynamics when those expectations are not met . When you enter a family that has less than favorable feelings towards you , the family can become a war zone of sorts . Sorting through all the baggage can take years , and take its toll and the family . Yet there is hope in these situations and steps to take to make the family more at peace . You can turn a negative perception into a positive one .

My husband and I have been married some 37 years and we ’ ve been up mountains and down into the valleys . To be honest , I was not the first pick for my husband ’ s family as a wife . They had high expectations for

their son , and rightly so . However , their high expectations made it very difficult for me to fit into their family .
Although at the start they were polite and accepting , that soon changed as they realized I was here to stay . Soon the silence came , then the off-color remarks . It did not take me long to realize I was not accepted . This caused problems not only in my relations to the in-laws , but with my husband as well . It put me in a position of hurt and resentment that I had to resolve quickly if I were to make my marriage work . There are things we can do to help in these situations that I have practiced and seen positive results .

The Bible instructs that when a man and woman marry they are joined together as one Genesis 2:24 ( NASB ) “ For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother , and be joined to his wife ; and they shall become one flesh ”. This right here is huge ! So many couples do not understand this concept , and parents struggle with this truth as well .
When a man and woman marry , they no longer cling to their parents , they cling to each other . Couples cling and parents let go . Exercised properly , this truth helps the whole family . However , when a family clings to their child and will not let go , chaos can be the result . Same with a couple
