CANADIAN VISION CARE FOCUSES
EFFORTS ON FORT MCMURRAY
Local Lions Clubs in Red Deer and Sylvan Lake in
partnership with Canadian Vision Care and EyeXperts
are assisting residents of the fire ravaged community
with getting the eye care they need. In addition, local
eye doctors from across Canada are stepping up the
challenge by offering services and resources to fire
victims at no cost.
In the short time since the fires broke out, more than
500 offices across have dispensed more than 2,000
pairs of glasses and contact lenses totally upwards of
$1million in glasses and exams. Canadian Vision Care
has partnered FYi Doctors, the Alberta Association of
Optometrists, and with the Red Cross who refer the
evacuees who have registered and got their Red Cross
number to eye care providers in the area.
Evacuees are finding refuge with family, friends and
across Alberta in Lions Camp Grounds where Lions
visit and offer support. CVC is looking at setting up
remote clinics if needed to deal with the volume of patients. With over 500 offices participating in this CVC
project, offices from coast to coast are ready to help. To

ca and all the informtion is online and easy to access.
“Patients who have been referred to us will have access
to free lenses, frames, contacts and contact solutions,”
said Leinweber. “All services are being conducted by
optometrists and opticians so patients will receive the
same professional level of care they would from their
regular eye care provider.”
In the panic of the Fort McMurrary evacuations, many
people were unable to take their medical necessities with
them including glasses, contacts and lens solutions or do
not have the necessary refills to maintain op timal
vision. Those who cannot afford their eye care or eye
wear, will not have to pay. People who are covered by
insurance are expected to use that insurance as CVC
is not in the business of providing charity to insurance
companies.

“We are working with our partners, from across the
industry to provide emergency eye care,” said CVC cofounder Dr. Gerry Leinweber. “Canadian Vision Care is
committed to being there for people in times of crisis to
ensure that they are able to have access to the resources
they need.”
CVC has been one of the largest and most successful
charity eye care programs with more than $90 million
worth of care delivered worldwide since 1981.
