Food Cravings
and Exercise
Food cravings are on oneweek intervals and are just
as unpredictable as my moods.
They have gone from grilled
cheese sandwiches, to anything
with cooked tomatoes, to stone
fruits, to rice with butter.
The cupcake is ubiquitous in
my thoughts and actions. I have
put my chef skills to use when it
comes to creating recipes that
I crave, but sometimes I don’t
need to make much because what
I’m craving is a single item such as
mustard or giardiniera straight out
the bottle. The most recent craving
has been for tuna fish sandwiches,
which I load with Olympic mounds
of mustard, pickles and tomatoes.
I
First Trimester Highlight!
I am doing my best to stay active,
and my husband consistently puts
motion in my ocean. He advocates
P90X, which I first rejected and
refused to do, and later ended up
loving. Now, just watching it makes
me tired. I have done a few sets
with a lot of modifications, but I
much prefer to just walk. Typically,
a two-mile walk a day is doable—even in this hot Houston
weather—as long as it happens before the sun comes up or after
it goes down. I will take bike rides with Ryan, but I have found
myself getting mad when he’s riding faster than me. I blame this
response on pregnancy hormones and not my wounded ego.
Sweetheart Smoothie
The highlight of my first trimester so far has been the second
ultrasound. Ryan and I went in together and this time it actually
looked like a baby. The cutest thing happened when we were
watching on the monitor—the baby started moving his (or her)
arms up and down in a dance sequence. At that moment, it felt
more real than it has before, and it moved our hearts profoundly.
I have high hopes for my second trimester. I hear that hormones
balance out and that pregnancy “glow” shines brightly. I’m sure
in a few weeks or so I will have a baby bump to show off, which
also means that complete strangers will assume the right to
place hands on my belly. I will, in turn, place my hands on their
face in protest.
Until next time, pregnant or not, try some of my recipes!

SERVES
Use all organic ingredients when possible.
There’s about 43 grams of caffeine in this one, but some days (especially when I have
to do demos) I need a little caffeine. My doctor says that up to 200mgs a day is fine.
I really feel an increase in energy when I drink this one.
