MORGAN ST. JAMES Once again, Mary Margaret helped him out, while Maude remained silent, twisting her handkerchief in her lap. “No, Officer Daily,” she offered. “No snapshots, but I can tell you Sherry is very pretty. She has this long blonde hair, and her eyes are big and sort of a weird greenish gray, I think it’s called hazel, with little gold-colored specks.” The officer nodded. “Go on.” In full Nancy Drew mode, the young girl gave the snotty police officer one of the best descriptions he’d ever heard. “Tall, she’s pretty tall. Almost as tall as you, but she’s not one of those people with a long body. It’s her legs that are long.” Mary Margaret put her finger up to her own nose. “Her nose is a little crooked, kind of like this.” She pushed her nose out of shape. “But she’s still so pretty. Just like a movie star.” He listened while making notes. “You mentioned they drove off in her car. Do you have any idea of what kind it was?” “Black. A black convertible. Of course the top was up because it was really cold out. Guess she’ll put it down in spring. Anyway, from my window I saw Laurie get in the car. It was real shiny.” He nodded and said, “Okay, little girl, that’s good. Do you know the make? You know, the brand of car?” “No, officer. I don’t know much about cars. Just that it was black. That’s all I can tell you.” Her voice cracked. “You can tell us the truth. You think something bad has happened to both of them, don’t you?” Daily looked at his watch and interrupted her. “No, Kid. I’m just the one who takes the reports. Do you know of anyone else who knows Sherry or where she lives?” “Well, there’s Madame Karakova, Laurie’s dance coach, but we already called her when Laurie didn’t come home. She gave us the number on Sherry’s registration card at the academy, but when we tried to call, the operator said there was no such number. And the address space on the card hadn’t been filled in, which made Madame Karakova get really mad at Rebecca. 28
