The Resident Evil series has never been afraid of reinventing itself . From it ’ s schlocky B-movie horror origins to the survival action of 4 and the globetrotting , cinematic styling of 6 , each entry has been willing to surprise and circumvent expectations . Resident Evil 7 is no exception , though in this instance the reinvention takes the series full circle , to the relatively constrained setting of a ramshackle house and its dark secrets . distinctly Resident Evil spin on things .
The biggest departure from the norm comes with the game ’ s first person perspective , but throwbacks to earlier titles are as frequent as they are welcome : save rooms return , complete with calming music and inexplicable item chests that can store your belongings for access anywhere in the game ; heavy . tank-like movement controls ; themed keys for locked doors ; inventory management ; even door opening sequences , which are still as tense now as they were in 1996 . The more you play , the more this feels like a Resident Evil game , even down to having to combine herbs with other items to make first aid supplies .
