Exiles leans heavily on the aesthetic of the classic 1986 Conan film , with stark wastelands and a rousing title theme , but does pull in familiar trappings from Funcom ’ s other Conan enterprise , the MMO Age of Conan . Its powered by Unreal Engine 4 , which produces some gorgeous , and very scalable , visuals .
Given the game ’ s Early Access status , there are plenty of areas that are rough around the edges . There ’ s no tutorial yet , so learning the game is very much a case of trial and error , and the AI is buggy at best – opponents will often freeze up instead of attacking you , or get stuck behind scenery . Combat and harvesting materials from corpses is a bit clunky – there ’ s a single , chargeable attack which enemies barely react to , coupled with unresponsive block and dodge maneuvers , and when a creature is defeated the only way to obtain meat and hide from it ’ s corpse is to hit it repeatedly until the body disappears .
Why build something yourself when you can get your thralls to do it for you ?
Fortunately , the crafting and survival elements are fairly well-handled , so even though the combat is somewhat lacking at the minute there ’ s a lot of promise here . Is it a game you should invest in right now ? That depends on your interest in early access , unfinished games . But it is definitely something to keep an eye on .
