AmbiRad displayed the genuine
energy saving benefi ts of this method
and its heating systems with an example
at RAF Brize Norton’s Base Hangar. The
station energy manager fi rst contacted
AmbiRad in 2004 to discuss the ineffi cient
and unsustainable heating system that
was in place at the time.
From 2004 to 2012 the cost of gas to
heat the hangar had risen from £400k to
£800k per year. Following an investigation
into the options, taking into account
whole life costing, AmbiRad’s radiant
tube heating was found to be the best
solution for long term value.
Economy and effectiveness are the
two key factors when selecting a heating
system for an aircraft hangar. The hangar
environment is too hostile for some
forms of heating. Warm air heating, for
example, would not be an appropriate
solution. The system would consume fuel
attempting to heat the entire volume of
air in the hangar and the temperature
stratifi cation would be enormous.
This volume of air would then only be
replaced instantly with colder external
air when the doors are open to allow
aircraft movement in and out, bearing
in mind that many aircraft maintenance
operations occur at night.
Radiant tube heating answers all of
these needs. It burns fuel (natural gas or
LPG) at the point of use so there is no loss
of effi ciency in distributing heat around
the building. Most importantly, in the case

of aircraft hangars, the warmth from the
radiant system felt by personnel is less
affected by cold air infl ux through doors
opening and closing, but also the ability of
the heating system to rapidly respond to
changed conditions is paramount.
After just a few months of instalment,
energy consumption in the hangar was
found to have reduced dramatically. The
result, a potential saving of 75 per cent
over the previous warm air system.
This is something that every sector can
benefi t from and with forward thinking
companies strongly backing the system,
there can be nationwide savings of up to
millions of pounds. With the uncertainty of
future energy costs, it is a saving that no
one can afford not to make.
