SAVING GRACE
Numatic is saving 21.8 per cent on its gas consumption with a Trend building management system ( BMS ) from BG Energy Solutions ( BGES ). BGES designed , supplied and installed the BMS at Numatic ’ s 26-acre site in November 2015 . Although the BMS is still in its first year of operation , the gas savings achieved mean that half of the initial investment has already been recouped .
Once the order was placed , BGES was tasked with designing and installing the system . All of the larger buildings on site at Chard featured space heaters , all but one of which are gas-fired . In total , 50 space heaters required control by the BMS , with each one wired individually . Most of the space heaters were retained , although a small number were replaced .
Numatic now has a schematic front end on its new BMS system which shows all buildings on site , all heaters and their settings , ensuring that temperatures and times can be adjusted easily and quickly . Furthermore , BGES has now installed links to gas and electricity submeters at the Chard facility so that Numatic has more visibility on its energy use .
With Numatic ’ s electricity bill averaging around £ 100,000 a month , the potential for savings is considerable .

CLEATS ACROSS THE WEAR
Ellis has developed a bespoke solution for Balfour Beatty to safely secure power cables running the length of the new Wear Crossing in Sunderland .
Currently under construction , the new two span cablestayed bridge features an A-frame pylon rising to 105m ( 344ft ), and will span the River Wear between Castletown on the north bank and Pallion on the south .
Ellis was approached by Balfour Beatty after its initial plan to secure the cables proved unworkable due to the product in question not having the necessary approvals . Although Ellis had no suitable , standard alternatives , the company ’ s innovative product development team went back to the drawing board and developed a project specific solution that finally secured the order .
Designed to support Emtelle ducts , which in turn support the power cables running the length of the bridge , the Ellis solution incorporates 252 specially designed assemblies , each comprising 12 standard 2F + 172 clamps and a stainless steel support frame .
Once complete , the Wear Crossing will carry two lanes of traffic in each direction , plus dedicated cycle ways and pedestrian footpaths . It is scheduled to open in spring 2018 and will be twice the height of Nelson ’ s Column .
