STUDENT SAFETY PREMIER LEAGUE STANDARD
Harper Adams University in Shropshire has installed
Aico’s 160e series of mains powered smoke alarms into
its student accommodation in a move to increase levels
of protection for students.
Harper Adams University is a specialist provider of
higher education for the agricultural and rural sector. It
has more than 4,000 students, many live on campus in
halls of residence and other properties, including semi-
detached cottages.
These cottages, each with four to fi ve bedrooms – already
benefi t from Aico smoke alarms in the landing and hall. The
university wanted to increase the level of protection, but
without the expense of moving to an LD1 system which
is the highest protection in fi re alarm system categories.
The solution was found in the use of Aico’s Ei160e
series mains powered alarms with 10-year rechargeable
Lithium cell back up with Ei164e heat alarms fi tted in
the kitchens and Ei166e optical alarms in the bedrooms.
The 160e series is compatible with existing Aico
alarms and accessories, enabling for full system
upgrades, simple system expansion and providing
fl exibility for possible future change of use of property.
Ei450 alarm controllers have also been fi tted in each
property to enable all alarms on the system to be easily
tested, silenced and the trigger alarm located from a
safe, accessible location. A variety of Thorn Lighting’s luminaires have been installed at Middlesbrough FC (MFC)
to elevate the facility to Premier League standards following the club’s promotion to the
English Premier League at the end of the 2015/16 season.
Staff offi ces and hospitality areas have been reconfi gured to make way for a state
of the art media suite complete with kitchen, mixed zone, fi ve interview rooms and a
TV editing suite. In addition, the reception has been modernised and new entrances
created for the players and the media.
Within the mixed zone, the media suite and the players tunnel there was a requirement
to provide fl icker free lighting for the broadcaster’s ‘super slo-mo’ images of the players
arriving. Thorn trialled various drivers and ultimately provided a Tridonic LED driver in
conjunction with the Omega Pro LED that worked extremely well with the TV cameras.
Thorns Omega Pro LED fi tting has a slim 12mm profi le and a UV stabilised opal acrylic diffuser so it will retain its clean
look. For other areas Thorns Chalice LED, Voyager and Arrowfl ex fi ttings were chosen.
Using LED luminaires has resulted in a signifi cant reduction in energy consumption when compared to the original
fl uorescent lighting and provided much better colour rendering and despite the demanding nature of the installation
programme, the project was completed on schedule.
