Updates from Special Programs

2016 has been a very busy year for ELC Special Programs . In addition to preparing for and hosting more than a dozen Special Program groups , it has gone through a change in leadership . Carol Wilson-Duffy , who was the Associate Director of Special Programs at the ELC for many years , decided to return to fulltime teaching , but she spent the first half of 2016 teaching ELC Student Advisor and instructor Mark Albee about his new role as External Programs Coordinator . Going forward , Mark , along with Special Program Coordinator Kimberly Benedicto , will be responsible for creating and overseeing Special Programs at the ELC

As part of the transition , Carol and Mark spent a few weeks in South Korea and Japan in May of 2016 visiting ELC partners , meeting with past Special Program participants , and giving orientations to incoming student groups . They visited with Hallym University and Chodang University administrators and students in South Korea , and in Japan , they met with ELC partners at Shiga University , Hiroshima University , Nagasaki University School of Medicine , Takenaka Corporation , and Hosei University . Although it was a very busy few weeks , they did find time to enjoy a few good meals with colleagues and former students , and they even spent a free hour in Hiroshima learning how good Sake is made . ELC International Student Mentorship Program Awarded Prestigious Grant

The International Student Mentorship Program was awarded a Continuing Inclusive Excellence Grant ( CIEG ) by MSU . The program is run by ELC Instructor Alissa Cohen who started the program in Fall of 2013 . The program matches provisionally-admitted MSU students in their last semester of intensive English classes at the ELC with two mentors each – one domestic MSU student as well as one former ELC student who is now a successful full-time academic student at MSU . Together , the three students complete a series of assigned tasks designed to help facilitate social , cultural , and academic adjustment and integration .
