64 Norman Irons, Mechanical Engineering, 1964 Why did you choose to study at Edinburgh Napier? “Napier Technical College had just opened its doors at Merchiston. I think that it was probably the only institution offering an HNC Mechanical Engineering then. We did have full-time students but many were on day release or night school study. I attended at least three and sometimes four nights every week.” Would you recommend Edinburgh Napier as a place to study? “I would certainly recommend Edinburgh Napier to any young person. I have known every Principal over the years. They have all set the goal of ensuring that graduates were fit for the workplace and equipped to advance in their profession.” What part did Edinburgh Napier play in helping shape your career or personal development? “In those days an HNC Mechanical Engineering with endorsements offered one route to Membership of IMechE. The quality of tuition and coursework enabled me subsequently to obtain Chartered Engineer status.” Describe your career progression? “I worked in a drawing office while studying and trained as a consulting engineer. I specialised in the design of services for buildings, heating/ ventilation/gas/water services and the like, and it was a satisfying job. I started my own business in 1983 and combined this with my role as a City Councillor. I applied the basic engineering which I had learned at Napier almost every day at work. I have retired now but as a consultant, I still keep a friendly eye on my younger colleagues.” What has been your greatest personal achievement? “There is no doubt that being Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1992 to 1996 was my most memorable achievement. My Honorary Doctorate from Edinburgh Napier comes a close second.” What are your favourite memories of your time at Edinburgh Napier? “The most memorable feature of Merchiston Campus was the paternoster lift – a series of open compartments which moved slowly in a loop up and down the building without stopping, with passengers able to step on and off at any floor. The bridies in the canteen were also exceptional!”
