Eilean Hamilton,
MSc Human Resource Management, 2011
What part did Edinburgh Napier play in helping
shape your career and personal development?
“Gaining my Masters degree has given me the
qualifications I need to take my HR career as far as
I would like. The experience positively contributed
to my personal development, improving my
teamwork and collaboration skills as well as my
ability to manage my time effectively.”
What has been your greatest personal achievement?
“Gaining a Distinction in my Masters dissertation;
I was absolutely petrified of writing a dissertation
and really didn’t think I had it in me. I avoided
starting it for as long as possible and my fears
were realised when I failed my initial proposal but
with a lot of help and support from my tutor and
hard work on my own part, I eventually managed to
complete it and achieved a Distinction.”
Can you describe aspects of your role that you find
most enjoyable and rewarding, and those you find
particularly challenging?
“The most enjoyable aspect of my role is also,
simultaneously, the most challenging. I have a
split role doing half HR generalist activities and
half Learning & Development. On the HR side, I am
responsible for recruitment, handling employee
relations, business partnering, coaching and
generally all HR activities for two offices.
On the L&D side, I design and deliver training to
offices across the globe. I really enjoy having a
split role and the variety this brings to my working
day. I like being involved in numerous activities and
dealing with a variety of people across the business
at any one time. However, it can be challenging to
keep track of everything that’s going on and make
sure that I’m working to the best of my abilities.”
Who was your favourite lecturer?
“I have two favourite lecturers – Norma D’Annunzio
Green was a brilliant Head of Year for part-time
students and I owe her particular thanks as she
nominated me for The Network Award Scotland
Graduate of the Year 2012, which I won.
“However, I am also very grateful to Allan
Rhamdhony, without whom I probably wouldn’t
even have attempted the dissertation that I
was so afraid of doing. I achieved a Distinction
because of his continuous guidance and advice;
his perseverance and constant responsiveness,
availability and support.”
