DTLA LIFE MAG #30 | HOLIDAYS 2016 | Page 4

As we enter the holiday season, a lot of people are protesting the election results. It is a sad time for our country and we wish that everyone is able to enjoy the best time of the year. Be thankful about the great things that we have in our lives, our families and friends, and focus on great causes that we can help. As part of United Way’s plan to eradicate poverty in L.A. County, the organization will host its 10th annual HomeWalk, a 5K family run/walk to raise public awareness and funds to end homelessness. Over the past nine years, 75,000 people have participated in HomeWalk, raising over $6.5 million and transforming 17,000 lives with the stability of a home. Every dollar raised goes directly toward ending homelessness and, thanks to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, every $5,000 a person or team raises will be matched with another $5,000 (up to $400,000). This year’s goal is to raise $1 million with the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Challenge. Registration is $25 for walkers and runners. Registrants 18 and younger are free. Los Angeles County is experiencing a homelessness crisis, one out of every 217 people in L.A. County is homeless. Nearly 47,000 men, women, children, and veterans are living without the safety and comfort of a home on any given night. One in four children in L.A. County lives in poverty. While we have made a tremendous impact reducing veteran homelessness by 57%, over 3,000 are still suffering on our streets. Over 15,000 Angelenos running and walking to help end homelessness.
