BLOND:ISH
DJ MAG CANADA: What made you decide to move to London?
We always wanted to move to Europe and we felt as though London would
be the best move as its pretty much the center of the electronic music
industry. We figured that we would be about one degree of separation
from every important person in the scene as well as a skip away from all
the amazing cities in Europe. It was the best move we ever made!
DJ MAG CANADA: How is the Montreal scene different than the
UK’s scene?
Montreal has a relatively small scene compared to London, so everyone
pretty much knows everyone there. That made it easier to start our own
night at Cherry on Wednesdays where Blond:ish was born. We developed
a sizeable network and fan base by promoting and DJing there for our
one-year weekly residency and it definitely helped open a lot of doors.
Fast forward to London … it has definitely shaped us as producers. Not only
have we been able to focus a lot more in the studio (less distractions for
us than Montreal) but we’ve experienced a whole new dimension in
clubbing by going to various east London parties... Hearing all the
incredible artists that come through here every week have inspired us to
make music that really represents what we’re into.
DJ MAG CANADA: How did you come up with your sound?
Our sound is just a representation of what were feeling at the moment. It’s
definitely constantly evolving and morphing into something new. It’s not
something you concoct… it happens organically over time.
DJ MAG CANADA: What is the songwriting process like for you?
Viv: Anstascia loves to work on the bacon (quoting our friends the Climbers
aka the meat and memorable parts) of the tracks, and Im more into making
a solid groove. Then we combine the two projects and go full force on it
together, but the process always changes from track to track.
Anstascia: We like to be efficient and not always work on the same thing
at the same time. Its been working for us brilliantly! We use ableton to get
the project going and ideas flowing and then move everything into logic
for mixing and arranging. A glass of wine always helps our juices.

DJ MAG CANADA: You have elements of psychedelica and 60’s rock
in your music. What role do you think nostalgia plays in music
today?
We think the initial fascination of psychedelica came deeply rooted from
our parents. Viv’s had a reel II reel playing non-stop in their house. Even
though we didn’t grow up together, we coincidentally each have had our
separate similar experiences. Were nostalgic in a sense where we wished
we lived during this era and soaked in the full spectrum of these times.
CURRENT TOWN:
A MIX BETWEEN TULUM, MEXICO, NYC AND IN THE
SPRING BARCELONA THEN
IBIZA FOR THE SEASON. WE JUST MOVED
OUT OF LONDON AFTER 3.5 YEARS, SO
PRACTICING BEING FULL TIME GYPSIES.
Musically, we just wanted to embody our experiences through the use of
loose guitars, organic programming and a splash of free spirit -- create
music that gets under your epidermis. As we’re attempting to constantly
evolve our sound and ideas, we both agree that its all about exploring the
outer limits of consciousness, the human experience, making things
legendary and close to the heart.

DJ MAG CANADA: What do you prefer, the technical side of
production, or the performance side? Explain.

We really enjoy doing both equally. The high of DJing your own productions
and seeing the crowd react is something really unexplainable. They go
hand in hand… and nowadays you can’t really be recognized as a DJ
without having a backbone of productions. Times have changed!

DJ MAG CANADA: You girls always look so cool, what inspires your
style?

Anstascia: Aww thanks (blushing)... our style is definitely inspired by
burning man.. We live, breath and sleep the burning man ethos and that
also naturally translates to our style... hippy chic with a splash of berlin
blacks.

Viv: I think the key is that I have no sense of style, and just throw things
together and hope for the best, lol.. .and I guess it appears that I might
have some sense of style! It’s my ‘look cool but never really thought about
it’ strategy hehe…
