Cooking Lake –
Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area
Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation, Wildlife and
Grazing Area is located 23 km east of Sherwood Park,
immediately south of Elk Island National Park. This
97-square kilometre (37-square miles) area is a provincial
multiuse site. The annual Canadian Birkebeiner Ski
Festival is billed as the largest classic cross-country
ski event in North America and is held at Cooking
Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area.
The area integrates cattle grazing, wildlife
management and public outdoor recreation
activities such as cross-country skiing, mountainbiking, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, horseback riding
and snowmobiling.

Strathcona Wilderness Centre
At the Strathcona Wilderness Centre visitors experience the
outdoors! This popular hiking and cross-country skiing
spot features 550 acres of natural serenity and 12 km
of trails. These trails wind their way through an aspen
parkland for est to the shore of Bennett Lake. Friends,
families, schools and groups can camp in tent campsites,
sleep in eight person bunkhouses or stay in a modern pine
lodge. The Wilderness Centre is your four season outdoor
adventure centre. Enjoy disc golf, snowshoeing, wildlife watching,

Ministik Bird Sanctuary
Ministik was the first bird sanctuary established in Alberta in
1911. Its 20,000-acred terrain provides for a diverse array of
habitat including an excellent undisturbed example of mixed
wood boreal forest. Ministik Lake is home to many threatened
migratory birds such as the American white pelican and blue heron.
The landscape supports abundant populations of moose and whitetailed deer, and lesser populations of mule deer, lynx and coyote. Enjoy
hiking, trail riding and bird watching.
