Park Rapids. He and his wife, Clara, spend a good
part of each summer at the campgrounds.
The campground, which has 50 acres of pine and
birch and 1,500 feet of sandy lakeshore, has space
for 120 campers and attracts 107 seasonal guests
from May through October. Seasonal customers,
mostly families who come each weekend, bring
their own RVs and pay a fee for the summer.
“Ninety percent of the seasonals are families
with kids,” Echtenkamp said, adding that the
population at the campgrounds swells to 500
or 600 people over the 4th of July. Amenities
include a heated outdoor pool, boats and canoes,
adjacent 18-hole Eagle View golf course, video
game room and playground.
The 400-square foot RVs many people bring
resemble mobile homes, Echtenkamp said,
adding that the RVs often include a loft, a flat-
screen TV, and granite counter tops. “They’re not
roughing it,” he said. “They put a deck on their
RV, landscape it, and bring a boat. Some of them
have $25,000 worth of landscaping, plus a block
patio and in-ground fire pit. Ninety percent of
them leave the RVs year around, wrapped in
plastic for the winter, and head south until spring.”
People coming for a week’s vacation is a thing
of the past, according to Echtenkamp. “That’s
