The trail runs through Walker and the Chippewa National Forest. This segment offers many recreational amenities: campgrounds, lakes and streams for fishing, hiking and plentiful birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunities. Paul Bunyan State Trail The Paul Bunyan State Trail, spanning nearly 120 miles from Lake Bemidji state Park at Bemidji to Crow Wing state Park near Baxter, is one of the longest rail-trails in the country. The trail passes through boreal forests, along more than 20 lakes and 10 rivers/streams, and among meadows sporting wildflowers in spring. The southern half of the trail passes through the towns of Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Pine River and Hackensack. Most of the northern portion, between Walker and Bemidji, is more secluded. In 2016, users should use caution between Nisswa and Jenkins. While the trail will remain open, State Highway 371 is being realigned and expanded to four lanes, and the trail being rebuilt in that area as a result.
