Students talk about social issues in Medellin

In April, guest speaker Jeffrey Winchell, co-founder Fundación Visibles, a foundation that supports homeless people in Medellin, came to speak to Klasse 11 students about homelessness in Medellin. This event was put together to give students the opportunity to learn about poverty in the world and especially in Medellin in order to complement the unit based on the book, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian” by Sherman Alexie.

Jeffrey spoke about the causes of poverty, namely:

• Internally Displaced People (IDP)

• Intra-familiar abuse

• Substance abuse

Additionally, he involved students in conversations about cultural poverty vs structural poverty and the complexities of each one.
