Below are some of the major events within the Winter Solstice of 2014/2015. Feb Black History Month 1-28 In 1926 Carter G. Woodson, first celebrated what is now known as Black History Month, on this date as Negro History Week. It became a month long celebration in 1976. Today, Africans and the black world celebrates by calling for black unity and progress. Feb 19 Martyr’s Day Martyrs’ Day Celebration established in 1937 by H.I.M. Haile Sellassie I in honor of those ancestors who gallantly defended and advanced the sovereign spirit of the Ethiopian land and people against the Italian fascists’ attempt to colonize Africa’s sole sovereign country at the time. Mar The Battle of Adowa 1-2 On this day in 1896 Empress Taitu and Emperor Menelik’s troops crushed the invading forces of Italy in Adowa, Ethiopia.
