CSGA Scholarship Fund
I
In Honor of Widdy Neale
n its sixty-third year the scholarship
fund continues to award $100,000
annually to high achieving employees
of member clubs. For the 2016-17
academic year forty-five young men and
women who have worked at their clubs for
at least two years received awards. They
include nine college seniors, twelve juniors,
twelve sophomores, and twelve freshmen.
The average grant is over $2,000 per year for
four years with the largest awards of $4,000.
Eligibility is based on the recommendations
of CSGA member clubs, and scholarships
are awarded by a Selection Committee
considering the academic performance,
school and community service, leadership
activities, and financial needs of the nominees.
The
“Marty”
Moraghan
Endowment within the CSGA’s Scholarship
Fund has reached over $65,000 in assets
and continues to grow. CSGA Executive
Director Mike Moraghan initiated the
“Marty” endowment in 2013 in honor of
his father who had served for many years as
CSGA rules and tournament director and
who was inducted into the Connecticut Golf
Hall of Fame in 1991. On July 18, 2016, son
Mike conducted a golf marathon at Marty’s
home base, Litchfield Country Club, that
yielded over $26,000.
The CSGA scholarship fund is the
beneficiary of two current endowments, the
Bob Pryde Endowment administered by the
Community Foundation for Greater New
Haven and the “Marty” administered by the
Officers of the CSGA Scholarship Fund.
The Fund’s endowment policy provides for
“named” scholarships through endowments
of at least $50,000. The policy provides that
an endowment may be established within a
five year window of reaching the $50,000
threshold.
In addition to the CSGA itself, the
Connecticut State Seniors Golf Association
continues as a Platinum donor to the
Scholarship Fund. Through its own 501(c)
(3) organization the CSSGA commits and
entrusts its scholarship funds to the Widdy
Neale program. Each year scholarships
are awarded in the name of the CSSGA
as well as other sponsoring organizations:
the Bob Pryde endowment, the JuniorSenior Golfing Society of Connecticut, the
Senior Golfers of Connecticut, and the New
England Senior Golfer’ Association.
During the summer 2016 two
Widdy Neale scholars made presentations to
the CSSGA at their June and July meetings.
The Fund is very proud of the appearances
of Sam Pieniadz (Rollins College, 2014)
and Julie Orenstein (Boston College, 2016).
Sam is in his third year at The Travelers, and
Julie recently joined a U. S. national security
agency in Washington, D.C. Their successes,
like those of so many other recipients, help
represent and extend the good work of the
scholarship program.
