Joseph Haydn
7 Last Words…
In 1783, Joseph Haydn was
commissioned to write a new work for
Easter for the Oratorio de la Santa
Cueva in Cadiz, Spain. Theatrical,
inventive, raw and soul searching, the
resultant ‘Seven Last Words of Our
Saviour on the Cross’ was music for
Easter unlike anything that had been
heard before.
This Easter, Northern Accents presents
Haydn’s astonishing and breathtaking
work (in its 1787 string quartet
arrangement), with text for our time
and place composed and read by
author, Jan Carson (Malcolm Orange
Disappears, Children’s Children).
Bookending the performance will be
an illuminating, informal pre concert
talk by Haydn scholar, Donal Bannister,
and a post concert opportunity to meet
and talk with the performers and
author.
