language course . The rest of the world works endlessly to be able to reach out to the American economy and media , yet our country does little to prepare our students to communicate back .
The world of education strives to meet the needs of the technological era , which is tilted in the favor of Americans , but language instruction does provide numerous benefits to all students , no matter the nationality . Modern American students are in desperate need of foreign language instruction , yet schools don ’ t meet this need . Currently no such education is required on the federal or state level .
Foreign language education opens up a world of opportunity to participating students . Looking even beyond the economic value ( bilingual candidates are more likely to receive jobs and earn more money in them ), an entire culture ( or multiple !) opens itself up to a student who begins to decode a language . Schools are more accessible to parents and community members who speak another tongue . In short , empathy is more viable .
There is also no shortage of benefits of globalizing a school through language . Many government and educational institutions such as the Confucius Institute are now offering grants to encourage instruction . In addition , bilingual children on average score higher on standardized tests , which are an increasingly common method for educational systems to allocate funds .
There is little to no argument for just how constructive foreign language education is--to parents , to educators , to students , and most importantly to the world around them . The vogue of STEM education has overlooked the virtues of immersion in another tongue , to the disbenefit of a generation of American students . It is a requisite in the modern age to be a productive citizen and worker . Languages unlock a whole other dimension of productivity and citizenship , not to mention a love of quintessential humanity ; that is what American schools ignore .
