The Pacific Gateway and BC Focus: BC is Canada’s Pacific Gateway The Gateway is a hub of transportation activity with a network of boats, trains, planes, and automobiles working together to transport people and goods across BC, Canada, and US. Increase international trade by meeting Asia’s growing demand for Canadian products: COAL NATURAL GAS SEAFOOD POTASH GRAIN Asian Investment Treaties* • Canada has 29 Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements (FIPAs) in force. Key Success Factors: Location & Partnerships • Asian countries with FIPAs: China, Thailand, and the Philippines. • BC ports are closer to Asian markets than any other ports on the west coast. • Ships from Asia can reach BC up to three days faster than Los Angeles, California • The Pacific Gateway Alliance is made up of the Government of Canada, the governments of Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan, CN, Canadian Pacific, Port Metro Vancouver, the Prince Rupert Port Authority, and the Vancouver Airport Authority. Percent of Export Trade with Asia:* 10% Canada 42% BC • Four out of 11 FIPAs in negotiations are with Asian countries: Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Pakistan. • India and Hong Kong FIPA negotiations have been concluded, but await signing or ratification.
