We go back to the beginning now and let ’ s say you decide to go down the contractor route , it is good to get more than one quote . Comparing quotes is always a good thing as there is more than one way of accomplishing a job . Ask them if they have done any similar work locally and then drive around to see their handiwork . Do not be afraid to ask the contractor for recommendations and follow them up . Some contractors will do all the work themselves and others will bring in subcontractors to complete certain tasks that are out of their skill remit . When using a contractor always ask to see their Public Liability Insurances and Employer Liability and check the dates are valid . There is a market for false documents , so again do not be shy to ring their insurers and check the documents are valid . Also notify your own house insurance company and let them know in writing that you are having work done and the extent of it .
