Get used to spending more time moisturizing whether
that means adding an extra session in your day if you
moisturize daily, or adding another day each week. Once
you’re in the rhythm of moisturizing more frequently,
when winter hits you’ve already established the habit
and aren’t stuck playing catch up.
What To Do: The key to moisturizing natural hair,
especially in the winter, isn’t only hydrating your
tresses, it’s keeping that hydration locked in. I like
to take smaller sections during the colder months to
ensure that I’m really coating each strand. Following
up with my favorite oil helps to seal in that moisture.
Take special note to focus on the ends of your hair as
those are most prone to breakage.
What To Use: In the summer months all your hair
products are lightweight. Who needs heavy hair
weighing them down? In the winter, swap out your
lighter serums with thicker creams. Creamy products
coat the hair better and stick around a bit longer which
is exactly what you need this time of year.
session with a cleansing conditioner. Then remember
to deep condition every time you wash your hair. And
finally, finish off wash day with a leave in conditioner.
What to Use: Conditioning treatments are another
option that you can DIY straight from your kitchen.
One of my favorite treatments to whip up is avocado
and olive oil. Coat your hair and let sit for an hour or so
while you catch up on your Netflix list.
PROTECTING
CONDITIONING
If you’ve been skimping on your deep conditioning
treatments, now is the time to get back on track. Winter
is not the season to skip the conditioner at all. I would
recommend deep conditioning weekly especially as
you turn up the heat in your home which is notorious
for drying out your hair without you even noticing. Get
used to following up every wash session with a deep
condition so your kinks and coils are ready to deal with
mother nature.
What to Do:There are three ways that you can make
sure you are maximizing your conditioning leading up
to and during winter. First, try swapping out a shampoo
Let’s be honest, you can spend the whole Fall season
strengthening, moisturizing, conditioning, and
protecting but life happens. Holidays happen, family
happens, and snow storms happen. Sometimes the best
option to truly make sure your hair is protected is to put
it away.
What To Do: There are tons of ways to protect your hair,
it all depends on what you want. If you’re looking for
something super low maintenance to get you through
the next couple of months you can try a protective style
like a wig, weave, or braids. If you don’t necessarily
need something so long term you can opt to wear styles
that keep the ends of your hair tucked up and away from
turtlenecks, sweaters, and the tops of your coat.
What To Use: Even though your hair might be tucked
away, still be sure to use the strengthening, moisturizing,
and conditioning methods above. Your hair is protected
but it still needs proper maintenance in order to get
through the winter.
