2016 FALL DINING GUIDE
Veggie Life
A guide to local vegetarian and vegan dining options
Veggie Heaven in Teaneck specializes
in vegetarian Chinese dishes.
D
ining out doesn’t need to be tough
for those looking for vegetarian and
vegan options. There are more choices
right here in Bergen than pasta, salad
and eggplant parmesan, including
several good vegan and vegetarian options for
area residents.
Mediterraneo, 23 N. Broad St., Ridgewood: The
focus is on healthy Mediterranean specialties,
from Spanish to Turkish to Moroccan. Featuring
falafel, hummus, chopped eggplant, nuts and
more, many of the traditional menu items and
tapas skew vegetarian – and quite a few of the
specials are often vegan.
Natural Way Café, 23-25 Broadway, Fair Lawn:
This café and juice bar is devoted to the idea
that eating healthy doesn’t mean eating
tasteless food. All “meat,” “poultry” and
“seafood” items are made from soy protein,
wheat gluten and/or vegetable products. From
the heat-safe grape seed oil that they cook, the
rich mineral PanGu salt that they add, and the
cleaner reverse osmosis water that they boil, the
cooking process is healthier from start to finish.
Nectar Café, 175 Rock Road, Glen Rock: This
new café has an ambitious raw menu, which
includes versions of crab cakes, tuna salad and
cinnamon buns (made with dates and raisins).
Bottled juices are produced in-house daily with a
cold-pressed process that extracts straight from
the pulp, preserving vitamins and minerals.
Customers can also get organic juice made to
their specifications. For dessert, try the raw vegan
Snickers bar, made with coconut oil, raw cacao,
maple syrup, dates and peanuts to create a
wholesome – and tasty – version of the iconic
candy bar.
Rutherford Pancake House, 40 Park Ave.,
Rutherford: This popular pancake house delivers
quite a few vegetarian and vegan breakfasts, as
well as daily homemade soups, sandwiches and
salads. Try the vegan pancakes baked with toasted coconut and topped with fresh strawberries.
Shelly’s Vegetarian Restaurant & Café, 482
Cedar Lane, Teaneck: An inventive menu for
vegetarians with classic grilled cheese, salads,
veggie burgers, unusual pizzas and pastas,
such as rotini with wild mushrooms, broccoli,
sun-dried tomato, black olives, pine nuts and
roasted shallot cream sauce. The menu also has
fish for pescatorians – those who don’t eat meat
or chicken but do eat fish.
Sweet Avenue Bake Shop, 153 Park Ave.,
Rutherford: This bakery specializes in whimsically
flavored cupcakes, brownies and cookies that
are all vegan and dairy-free. They offer some
gluten- and soy-free options, too.
Veggie Heaven, 473 Cedar Lane, Teaneck:
Veggie Heaven specializes in vegetarian
Chinese dishes, from fried rice to sweet and
sour “chicken” that is actually carefully prepared
tofu that replicates the taste and texture of
meat. ◆
