8 2016 FALL DINING GUIDE The amazing allure of fall fare In autumn, farm-fresh takes on a whole new meaning WRITTEN BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA T he splendors of fall are annually plentiful and a welcoming respite to the sultry, activity-packed months of summer. The leaves turning create a masterful landscape that any can appreciate. The cooler air is a welcome relief from the hot and humid months just endured. But most of all, the culinary creations that fall spawns may be the season’s greatest reward. From the crowded tables of vendors manning farmers’ markets throughout Bergen County to the fields of the few remaining operating farms in Northeast New Jersey, fall fare is widely available – round pumpkins in the fields at Abma’s Farm in Wyckoff, juicy apples ripe for the picking in the orchards at Demarest Farms in Hillsdale and yummy pies, ciders and other delectables at area outdoor markets throughout our towns. “The first thing that comes to mind is the palate of colors at the Ramsey Farmers’ Market on these cool, brilliant days of fall, as the abundance of produce spills over the farmers’ tables, complimenting the fall foliage,” says Nancy Boone, manager of the Ramsey Farmers’ Market. “Red, yellow, purple, orange and green – from crisp juicy apples, luscious pears, pumpkins in all sizes, concord grapes, colorful flower bouquets, and loads of collards, kale, cranberries, squash in all varieties, plump eggplants and so much more. Visitors to the market know to follow the seasons for fresh and local produce and a snap of frost only heightens flavors.” According to Boone, the market is filled with fall-oriented events through October. An Apple Festival kicks off Sept. 25 and this year’s first Garlic Festival took place Oct. 9. On Oct. 23, AMY NEWMAN Pumpkin picking at Abma's Farm in Wyckoff brings patrons from near and far who not only walk away with their new pumpkin, but usually with plenty of farm-fresh food from the market as well.
