UPCOMING EVENTS Program Highlights William Hogarth (1697-1764): The Enraged Musician (1741), detail. Baker & Baker Presents: Art of Music: Jazz – The Sounds of Impressionism Friday, April 5 | 7:00 p.m.  “Impressionist Music” was used to describe the romantic classical works of composers such as Debussy and Ravel in the late 19th century, but perhaps it more aptly describes that unique American art form—jazz! As Monet advises, “try to forget what objects you have before you…paint it as it looks to you…until it gives your own naïve impression of the scene before you.” In this spirit, John Tecklenburg has assembled both classical and jazz musicians to offer their collaborative interpretations of the sounds of Impressionism. John Tecklenburg on piano, Jon Phillips on saxophone, Stephan Berry on trumpet and flugelhorn, Brian Reed on French horn and Ellen Dressler Moryl on cello. $10 / $8 for members. Music 101: British Music and Art in the Age of Handel and Hogarth Wednesdays, April 17 – May 15 | 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. The popular Music 101 lecture series returns with a six-week exploration of British culture during the 18th century. Beginning with the restoration of the monarchy (1660) after the English Civil War and concluding with the crowning of Queen Victoria (1837), this course surveys the musicians, artists and social forces that transformed London into a vibrant artistic center. Peter Hoyt, Adjunct Curator for Music, presents a survey of this brilliant and tumultuous period in England and its colonies. In addition to listening to compositions, this class examines architects and artists with special attention given to the English tradition of comic engravings as exemplified by William Hogarth and his successors. Pre-registration required. Series: $80 / $64 for members. Individual Class: $15 / $12 for members. Arts & Draughts Friday, May 3 | 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. Art, drink and be happy!
