Art School: Figure Drawing With the Gods

Students work from nude models amidst the Renaissance tapestries from
the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. This 6-week class focuses on figure
drawing fundamentals and covers gesture, contour, value studies and
comprehension of mass. All materials are provided, and no experience is

Sewing in a Day: Purses

Learn how to read and cut patterns, assemble pieces, and sew a basic
purse by learning the ins and outs of sewing machines and essential tools.
Instructor Christina Lewis started sewing in middle school under the guidance
of her mother and 15 years later, sewing is still her favorite pastime.

Fused Glass: Stacked Casting

Students explore the use of powders, stringers and glass scraps to create
several colorful art pieces in fused glass. Instructor Steve Hewitt has been a
ceramic studio artist for over 35 years, and currently his work is focused on
kiln-formed glass. Hewitt has studied with numerous glass artists at Arrowmont
School of Arts and Crafts, and his works reference antiquity, human nature and
war. All supplies are provided.

Our city is our canvas. What will we envision? Play
With Your City is a new public art initiative that
challenges how we think about our urban spaces
by using downtown sites in exceptional and surprising ways. This project, created by the Columbia
Design League, an affiliate membership group of the
Museum, is designed to foster innovative approaches
to shared spaces within our community. The goal
of the initiative is to demonstrate that effective,
engaging public art can be produced on a small
budget and by all kinds of people.
Each summer, the Columbia Design League will
announce an open call for proposals. Proposals will
be judged by a panel of jurors or a visiting curator.?
The finalists will be announced in the fall and the
winner will be determined in the Play With Your City
Face-Off, a dynamic public event where finalists
present their proposals. Projects may last 10 minutes,
10 weeks or 10 millennia! For more information:
