Photography students at Winthrop University and the University of South Carolina were asked to submit bodies of work based on one of the themes central to Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage. They walked a path of self-exploration and discovery resulting in an introspective exhibition of hauntingly beautiful works. The Other Side of the River by tenth-grader Miranda Hovis is part of the Converging Ideas exhibition. The interactive education gallery at the museum highlights the creativity, talent and skill of South Carolina students in grades kindergarten through college with several exhibitions a year. Each show is inspired by the work we do here at the CMA including the diverse traveling exhibition schedule, the CMA collection, or the programs and community outreach led by our award-winning education staff. This fall the Education Gallery will host two photography exhibitions: Converging Ideas: Waterways of South Carolina, August 22 – September 15, and The View from Here, October 3, 2013 – January 5, 2014. The CMA curates and displays a student photography exhibition, now in its fourth year, which showcases the beauty of our state. Converging Ideas premieres at the CMA and then travels to Washington D.C., where it is installed in U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham’s offices on Capitol Hill for one year.
